Picture Postcard Madrid October 2015, By David Keegan

Snapshot of a long weekend visit to Madrid

Overview

This was my first time to visit Madrid and although the weather was a little grey and rainy at times it was still possible to soak up the true charm and ambiance of this wonderful city. I would say its a great destination for a long weekend for those looking for a short European break.

Getting there

We flew Ryan Air with tickets at a very reasonable £70-80 sterling per person return if booked well in advance. To bag the best prices its usually advisable to try and book about 3 months in advance.

Eating Out

Whilst in my opinion Madrid pales in comparison to the food available in the North of Spain (in places such as San Sebastian) the nightlife and atmosphere is as vibrant as any other Spanish city i have visited. One place i will give a mention to though is Golfo De Bizkaia  @ Calle Plaza Del Angel, 928012 Madrid. Be warned though food is good but the service is not great!!

Another great district to visit is Plaza Lavapies28012 MadridSpain. Take to the many little side streets and wander.

Places to see

The Grand Via the main shopping street with all the big name stores and leading down to the Prado, which i have to admit failed to impress beyond its sheer scale. However just to the side of it is the Botanic Gardens, which although small are perfectly formed and a must see in my book for anyone visiting Madrid. Also high on the list is the restored Atocha  train station now home to a wonderful indoor tropical oasis complete with walkways seating areas shops and restaurants..

Accommodation

We found that Air B&B offered the best choice and price for holiday accommodation for our visit.

Air B&B

I will return! We even managed to catch a glimpse of Micheal Portillio  wandering back to his hotel looking as colorful as ever!!
